Etextbooks

Laredo College and Follett, the college bookstore, have partnered to deliver eBooks and digital access codes to students. The primary goal of the eBook program is to minimize student cost for books and course materials. The program also aims at connecting an eBook access code directly to classes so that students have access to their course materials from the first day of class.
The material is structured for a 4-year, residential campus. So, 2-year colleges would likely need to refine or be selective with the content. The interface is acceptable, college semesters books but the images, charts and test blocks do not show up in WORD, which is problematic if the student needs to use the reader in WORD for their coursework.

“Many of our faculty and students are displaced and separated from their textbooks. Students may still be required to purchase other learning materials, such as a lab kit, microscope, hardware, software, calculator, etc. A list of your course materials can be located on the course page, or you can contact your home college bookstore for a list of, and to purchase, course materials and supplies.
Statistics from current research shows that the non-traditional student on campus is beginning to surpass the traditional students in numbers. The text clearly lacks sensitivity and understanding of diversity at many points within the book. CommentsI think the book has a lot more positives than negatives but I feel it would be information overload for students who would use this book. Although the subject matter is very good and it does have a lot of ways that students can have success in college i am leery on how many college students will actually read the book.

Every student should have received an email with their order number via email when they made the rental transaction, whether in-store or online. Cengage will be offering "rolling" trial access to students through the end of the current term. Usually, students are allowed one two-week trial to Cengage Unlimited per semester. Now, due to the unplanned COVID-19 public health emergency, Cengage is providing extended access. Students should create an account and sign up for "Start Free Trial." In two weeks, you will be reminded to renew the trial. The renewal process should only take a few minutes, and you will be able to continually renew free access through the end of this term. So, before you let the financial burden of funding college impact your educational experience, check out some of the above options for online copies of your required text.
The textbook is expansive in the breadth of topics studied, yet detailed in key areas relating to the first year college experience. That being said, the voluminous nature of certain chapters, particularly the first few, may be too much information in too dense of a format for the students to whom this text is geared. I am in my 15th year teaching community college and non-traditional students, and experience shows many individuals will tune out rather than read the copious text of those chapters.

It may be more effective to cut back on some of the content and reduce the number of pages overall to provide a more concise guide. The chapters and subsections are easy to navigate, could be used in a custom order and remixed or reorganized. Chapters open with learning objectives and self-assessments that set up the lesson/chapter content, and close with key takeaways and check point exercises.
A you’ve probably seen during the last three days, getting a college education through your computer obviously presents many challenges. However, some of the major textbook companies are helping ease that transition by offering free textbook access to students during the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve always believed in the enormous impact digital course materials have on affordability, access, and outcomes in higher ed. As institutions across the country grapple with responses to COVID-19, we’ve committed to supporting our campus store and institutional partners during this uncertain time. Students today are used to digital tools that allow them to share everything from pictures of their morning cup of coffee to their notes from class. So when they run into restrictions and a lack of social tools when using eTextbooks, they’re understandably disappointed.
The content within the book is relevant to first-year students for a long period of time. As students change, the majority of the transitions are going to remain the same/similar. Very comprehensive book for a first year experience course!

As noted earlier, when instructors model e-textbook use, students tend to prefer e-texts over print and demonstrate higher learning outcomes. Showing students how to most effectively read and study from an e-textbook, which differs fundamentally from a more linear print textbook, is critical for effective integration of the e-textbook into the course. Still relatively new, digital reading has grown slowly in United States higher education.6 Because of this, books developed and delivered digitally are still evolving and can vary widely. A universal standard called electronic publication exists; however, companies such as Apple and Amazon have created proprietary formats.
Gordon State College Bookstore is owned and operated by Gordon State College. All profits from sales in the bookstore will go back to the college. Many programs and improvements on campus are funded by the bookstore-where funding would not be available through state funds. Essentially, books purchased elsewhere effects your college community . One of the biggest expenses of college -- other than tuition, of course -- is textbooks and required reading books. You can lessen the blow by going digital, buying used or renting.

Since this book is nearly six years old, I wonder about it inclusiveness to more pertinent up-to-date material especially technology. This textbook covers all the areas of college success that we cover at our community college. The information on social world, finances, and your health are very comprehensive. The text provided excellent comprehensiveness, ranging from academic success suggestions, personal and interpersonal advice, over-all college success advice, to managing time and money.
